Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

Colin Kaepernick and Nevada burst onto the National scene with the Pistol offense and a terrific season that hit it’s high note with a victory over then top five ranked Boise State last fall. I must admit for all the success Kaepernick had in college, of the top quarterback at this draft, he was the last on my list of hopefuls for my home town 49ers to select.

That said, while Kaepernick will be challenged with learning to play under center, like Alex Smith was coming out of Utah, this young quarterback will have a completely different supporting cast than the former first overall selection had. The 49ers actually have an offensive minded Head Coach, something Smith never had in his long run with the 49ers, and Kaepernick will have a respectable, young supporting cast around.

The same couldn’t be said for Smith, as the 49ers offensive line was in shambles, and his best play maker was a young Brandon Lloyd that was (at times) afraid to go over the middle.

Finally, a 49er quarterback can rely on an offensive playbook that will be here to stay as long as Coach Jim Harbaugh is with this team. The road to success, and fantasy football relevance may be quicker than many realize for Kaepernick, as his added running ability will give him bonus value in his stat line.

Don’t expect big things this season, as the NFL lockout and a rookie season are too much to project Kaepernick as a fantasy option this season. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Kaepernick becomes a trendy waiver wire to late round selection in 2012 leagues. The future is still bright for the 49ers offense, with a young talented nucleus.
