Fantasy Football Outlook: Taking a closer look at Peyton Manning, perhaps my early optimism got in the way of providing balanced analysis of his fantasy projections.
Manning will still be a darn good quarterback in the NFL and is a QB1 option in at least 12 team leagues, but I feel it would be irresponsible to keep his early projection of over 4,500 yards passing and over 30 touchdowns up on this page.
The Broncos have a couple of dependable tight ends and receivers Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker should perform at at least a WR3 level.
Still, let us not forget that Manning did miss all of last year with a potential career ending neck problem that could crop up on him again. While he should be fine, Manning may never fully recover from his ailment and with weak depth overall at receiver and a new team to work with, it’s probably going to take a season before we see the true Manning of old.
The Broncos have a tough schedule early and won’t help Manning’s cause to be your weekly option, especially with so much depth at the quarterback position to select this year.
Unfortunately, a ranking just outside of the top ten quarterbacks may mean you have to pass on him because someone in your league is going to view him as a top ten quarterback (ADP Trend 8th Overall) and will jump on him in the early middle rounds.
Don’t be that guy, and rather look to options around him like the two receivers listed above, tight end Jacob Tamme or even rookie running back Ronnie Hillman as an upside pick late in your draft.

Early 2012 Fantasy Projections
Things are going to look quite different for both Peyton Manning and the Broncos offense this year. Transitioning from a run heavy offense with Tim Tebow to a pass first offense with Manning shouldn’t be much of a problem, especially with Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas both expected to be fully healthy, heading into the pre-season.
Health, will be the key word for this passing game but it even though Manning missed all of last season, he still warrants top eight consideration at the quarterback position, for fantasy leagues. That may not sound very high but when you consider this is the deepest quarterback class I’ve seen in over 20 years of playing fantasy football, it’s really not a knock at all.
In the pre-season, I will be interested to see if Manning is showing any problems throwing to either side of the field, or if he has to put a little extra body english into his deep throws. Even if Manning has to make some adjustments to his game, he should still have no problem throwing for over 4,500 yards and 30 plus touchdowns.
Question is, are you willing to handle having him as your starting quarterback, knowing one hit could knock him out for his career? Personally, I have no problem with the possibility and will be targeting him from the 5th round down.
Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
Go ahead and accuse me of jumping the gun if you like, but my confidence is shaken about Peyton Manning’s health, despite reports that he will be ready for week one. I still believe that Manning will be one of the better quarterbacks to draft, but I would suggest you look to him as the seventh best quarterback on your draft board.
Originally, I had Manning in the top five but after reports that Manning wouldn’t be ready to begin throwing (second neck surgery in as many years) when camps open, I’m not so sure he will hold up throughout the season and play at a Manning like level. Last season, while Manning did post strong numbers, it was clear that his neck was still bothering him as you could see him grimacing from time to time.
As long as Manning can get on the field and practice, he’s going to be on the field for game day’s and will probably grind his way through a full 16 games. That said, if he should have trouble throwing the football over 30 attempts per game, we could see the Colts lean on running backs like rookie Delone Carter, to take some pressure off their star quarterback. This wouldn’t be good for fantasy owners as you want the Colts to remain as a pass heavy offense. The last time Manning was unable to work on the field during the summer (2008) he was clearly not the same player in spurts and if he does that again, you may have to sit him on the bench for more aggressive options like Matthew Stafford of the Lions.
Again, Manning is a gamer and will have respectable numbers overall, but I recommend you look to Rodgers, Vick, Rivers, Brady, Brees and Romo before selecting Manning, at this time. If we can see Manning play a couple preseason games, and throw the football without showing signs of pain, I might move him up again, but that won’t happen until late August.

2011 June
Peyton Manning’s stats would suggest that he was just as dominant as ever in 2011 but at times the veteran didn’t seem right. Come to find out that Manning had his second neck surgery this spring in the last 15th months, and we start to have some idea of why this legend seemed a little off.
The bottom line for fantasy football is that Manning was kicking butt on the field as he averaged 293.8 yards passing per game and threw another 33 touchdowns on the season. Impressive when you factor in that he had to deal with a bunch of injuries to pass catchers like Dallas Clark, Austin Collie and so on.
It doesn’t seem to matter who is on the field with Manning as this future Hall of Fame quarterback just keeps the chains moving and finding ways to make the playoffs. Expect another fine season from Manning as he still has a great supporting cast around him and should be one of the top four fantasy quarterbacks to select at all fantasy drafts this summer.
2010 Preview
Peyton Manning had another fabulous fantasy season in 2009. With young receivers Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon and Anthony Gonzalez back, Manning should have another terrific season in 2010.
2010 Fantasy Football Outlook
2009 Fantasy Year In Review: The loss of Anthony Gonzalez week one had fantasy owners concerned that Peyton Manning might struggle. Instead a stat decrease Manning found two new receivers in Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie to help him have another great fantasy season.
Throw in a career year from Dallas Clark and Manning put together one of the better seasons in his great career. Unfortunately all that came crashing down in week sixteen when fantasy owners played their championship games. That week ownership decided it was better to pull Manning and his starts in the second half than chase perfection.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Look for Manning to have another fabulous season as Gonzalez is returning to give “The Sheriff” another gun in his holster. With so many weapons to throw to, the Colts individual receivers could suffer in numbers because the football gets spread around.
While that may not be good for them, it is very good for Manning as he can use all his weapons to find more miss matches in the defense and take advantage.
