Fantasy Football Outlook: The Packers must be impressed with Alex Green’s rehab from an ACL tear last year because they’ve failed to add a veteran in free agency and only brought in a few underrated rookies for competition. Green has the ability to be a solid starting tailback in his league, and the Packers didn’t invest a mid-round pick on him for nothing last year.
While we should look to James Starks as the starter week one, Green will have a role in this offense, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was starting by mid-season. Until we see Greens’ role expands in the offense, he’s no more than a stash on the bench for deep redraft leagues and dynasty leagues.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
It will be interesting to see which young power back steps up to be the clear number two runner behind Ryan Grant in Green Bay. Many would point to James Starks as the obvious talent to get early work behind Grant, and I can’t argue with that, after Starks helped the Packers to a Super Bowl last season.
Still, Alex Green is a talented third round pick in the is year draft and when you stack Green up to Starks, I believe it will be the rookie that wins out for touches in the long run. Next season Grant will be a free agent, and the Packers are tentatively expected to go with Green and Starks as a one two punch starting next year.
For this season, Green isn’t worth a draft selection in re-draft leagues, but if you get rights to rookies in keeper leagues, he’s worth taking if you can wait on him a year. Green’s added receiving skills, makes him the better runner in PPR leagues long term, and he has better break away ability than Starks.
Remember, while Starks is listed at 6’2, 218 pounds, Green is no small fry as he check in at 6’0 and 225 pounds. I point that out to say that Green may not lose goal line touches to someone like Starks in the long run because he has the size to handle the football in that area. Starks will get time in this offense, but Green is the one to watchout for if Grant should suffer an injury, and as we head into the 2012 season, Green could breakout big.
