Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

Anthony Dixon became a preseason star with the 49ers as he was giving extra work with the team resting Frank Gore and the sudden retirement of Glen Coffee in August. While Dixon only gained 3.4 yards per carry last season, he did show flashes of a runner that could be useful for fantasy if given a chance in the future.

This off-season it looks like Gore will be fine coming into camps as his hip is back to normal after an injury cost him time a the end of last season. The 49ers also drafted Kendall Hunter in the middle rounds of the draft as he will be the 49ers change of pace back to take over as Brian Westbrook’s replacement. As long as Dixon continues to progress, I would figure the 49ers will use him as Gore’s main backup and he may get the occasional touch around the goal line.

If Gore should go down at any time, Dixon looks to be the ideal runner to grab off the waiver wire over Hunter at this point in time.

August 2010: Glen Coffee retires

With the surprise retirement of Glen Coffee the door has opened for someone to become Frank Gore’s backup. Rookie Anthony Dixon has impressed in the preseason and could be a fantasy relevant player at some point this season.
