Fantasy Football Outlook: Until taking over a starting role due to injury, DeMarco Murray failed to show much. Oh, how things changed as Murray quickly became the lone star rookie running back to shine (in my opinion) on the football field. Before an ankle injury ended his season prematurely, Murray was on pace to blow by 1,000 yards rushing and he flashed his sure hands in the passing game.
My lone knock on Murray’s game from a fantasy standpoint was he only rushed for two touchdowns but his size, and the lack of competition, suggest he will be the regular red-zone option.
In an effort to cleanse my mind on whether Murray was just a one-year wonder, I dug a little deeper and went back to listen to some of the old Shutdown Corner podcasts with Greg Cosell. In a November podcast (8:26 minutes in), Cosell discussed how Murray was running through big holes in his early games, but it was his performance against the Redskins that impressed him as Murray showed the ability to run well, even when the holes weren’t there.
While Murray still has to work on parts of his game, he has the raw skill set to be a stud feature back in this league, and the Cowboys are clearly tied to Murray as the starting tailback of the future. Health can be a concern, but Murray will be in my top ten running backs for standard leagues, and he holds even better value in PPR leagues.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
While DeMarco Murray’s presence in the Cowboys’ backfield probably marks the end for Marion Barber, it may not solve the teams’ injury prone problems at this position. Murray has the skill set to be a decent fantasy option, but he will probably lack enough touches in the offense with Tashard Choice and Felix Jones on the roster.
Last season with Oklahoma, Murray posted 71 receptions for over 500 yards and the Cowboys are expected to use him in the slot at times. This use will give him added value in PPR leagues as the Cowboys seem committed to giving him the football in different ways.
Because of Murray’s projected health concerns, he’s probably never going to be a feature type back, which means he may find a stretch of solid play for fantasy football but ultimately will find his way to the bench or waiver wire in many leagues.
