Jonathan Dwyer

Jonathan Dwyer | Pittsburgh Steelers | RB

Height: 6-1 Weight: 235 | Born: 7/26/1989

2011 Experience: 2nd Season

Fantasy Football Outlook: Medical question marks watched Jonathan Dwyer’s draft stock fall from a projected third round selection down into the sixth round when the Steelers selected him. For most of Dwyer’s rookie season he spent on the practice squad (learning I formation), but he found his way onto the team at the end of the season and got a few carries.

I liked this running back coming out of Georgia Tech, but he has a way to go before he ever finds fantasy relevance with the Steelers. Dwyer will need to progress if he’s going to stay on this team in 2011, and I expect that to happen as he hopefully makes the roster for opening day. I could see Dwyer as a breakout waiver wire option should something happen to Rashard Mendenhall, as Dwyer has some decent skills.

As for now, Dwyer is far way from considering in fantasy football, but remember the name should he make the squad and Mendenhall starts showing signs of poor health.

2010 Preview

Because of medical drug issues and some ticky tack measurable knocks, Jonathan Dwyer fell from a second round prospect to to a sixth round selection. This hurts Dwyer’s chances in the short run but he should be a good compliment runner to Rashard Mendenhall this season.

2010 Fantasy Football Outlook

College / 2010 NFL Draft: Jonathan Dwyer enjoyed success as Georgia Tech tail back but seemed to have problems proving he could be successful in the NFL. A few months before the draft Dwyer was thought to be at least a third round selection but on draft weekend he fell all the way to the sixth round.

Questions about his hands, speed and medical issues caused Dwyer to free fall out of where his ability suggested he should go. In the end, it was the Steelers that took a chance on this talented player, and he is now a strong candidate to backup Rashard Mendenhall.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Dwyer had much to learn coming into OTA’s this offseason has he would have to learn the, I formation as he ran a different style in college. As we are in late June now it looks like Dwyer is picking up the offense well and could unseat Mewelde Moore as the No.2 runner in this offense.

Dwyer is also in a battle to win the Steelers short yardage carries as it is an open competition for those touches. In the end, as long as Dwyer continues to progress, I expect him to be Mendenhall’s backup at some point this year. For a team that is projected to be run heavy this season, Dwyer could see some decent work in the offense.

If Mendenhall should go down for any length of time, Dwyer would be a hot name on the waiver wire this season.
