Fantasy Football Outlook: As an Oregon Ducks fan, it makes me sick to my stomach to watch how the Panthers have wasted Jonathan Stewart’s prime as a freaking backup player. That said, Stewart has had his health issues over the years and keeping him on a pitch count only helps his odds of staying on the field.
Hopefully this will be the final year Stewart plays in Carolina (contract year) and he moves on to a feature back opportunity next year. Until that time Stewart is nothing more than an RB4 backup as he will have to deal with Mike Tolbert and DeAngelo Williams for touches.
Stewart has the size to be a solid goal-line runner, but with Cam Newton and Tolbert on the team his opportunities won’t be consistent.
Unless injuries happen in the backfield, Stewart will have a hard time giving you more than RB4 to RB3 production.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
What a big let down it was when DeAngelo Williams re-signed with the Panthers as both Williams and Jonathan Stewart will remain in the backfield. What looked like a possible starting gig for Stewart turned into making the best backup running back in football, once again.
While I don’t like the move for the amount of money, the Panthers paid Williams, I can understand why they want to keep him. This team will live and die on their running game, and with Stewart’s injury history and Mike Goodson’s fumbling problems, they probably felt it was worth holding onto Williams.
Factor in that Carolina is developing Cam Newton as a young quarterback, and it will be essential that they lean on the running game. Stewart will probably end up with around the same numbers we saw in the past few seasons. Don’t be surprised if Williams stays healthy throughout the season, as his extra rest because of injury last year, will probably keep him fresh to play a full season. Stewart now falls out of the top twenty tail back (if he was a starter) and will now be a top forty option to stash on your squad, in case Williams falls to injury. If the Panthers can play well enough to hang around in close ball games, it would allow Stewart to find enough carries to be a flex play option. Don’t count on that happening as this team figures to be one of the worst squads in football, yet again.

June 2011 – Stewart Could Start
The Panthers are hopeful DeAngelo Williams will stay in Carolina, but I’m sure all fantasy owners are crossing their fingers for a change. If Williams should leave, Jonathan Stewart would finally get the starting job to begin the season, and we can start ranking him as a feature back. Unfortunately, the Panthers offensive passing game is going to suck once again and it looks like Steve Smith will leave after the lockout, leaving Jeremy Shockey as the only proven pass catcher on the team.
While Stewart is a talented running back I feel like he is the Nelson Cruz (outfielder, Texas Rangers) of fantasy football in that he has great skills but will never hold up for a full season. If Stewart should get the starting job, however, he is too talented to move outside of the top twenty fantasy backs.
Stewart’s ADP value heading into the summer on Mock Draft Central has him 19th overall running back being selected in standard redraft leagues. That average draft position is about right for Stewart as he will probably go as a late No.2 fantasy back in ten team leagues.
2010 Preview
Jonathan Stewart will have to play second fiddle to Williams once again in Carolina. Still, Stewart is the most dangerous backup in football and should be an easy mid round pick on draft day.
2010 Fantasy Football Outlook
2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Jonathan Stewart missed another offseason because of an Achilles tendon issue, and it was unclear if he could last the entire season. Stewart to his own admission noted that he believed he would only play in around six games before he needed surgery and would be done for the year.
In the end Stewart lasted the full season and started three games as DeAngelo Williams had his own health issues. For the second year in a row Stewart had double digit touchdowns, and he even went over 1,100 yards rushing for the season.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: It’s hard to hold back from drafting this ultra talent early on, even if he is a backup on the team. I’m sure other fantasy football websites will have Stewart ranked in the top twenty fantasy backs, but we are a little more conservative and have him in the top twenty five.
At the end of the day it’s hard to select a player that isn’t even starting as one of your top five players to count on as you start building your team on draft day.
Make no mistake about it though if Stewart was a feature starting running back he would make for an easy top ten runner to take on your team. No one can deny his ability to make big plays and score touchdowns regularly when given an opportunity to start.
When he’s the backup behind Williams things are a little more shaky as we don’t know when his bigger performances might come. At the end of the day Stewart makes for a good flex play option as the teams back up and a super star if Williams goes down. If you’re willing to grab three running backs in maybe the first four rounds of your draft than Stewart makes for a fine selection. Just make sure you have a couple other respectable names on your team at this position because he does have health concerns.
