Fantasy Football Outlook: A productive tailback in San Diego, Mike Tolbert drove Ryan Mathews owners nuts, as he took away goal line touches and valuable snaps. Tolbert also benefited from Mathews inability to say healthy, but he may not be as fortunate in Carolina.
Coach Ron Rivera (former DC with Chargers) has consistently maintained that Tolbert will be a fullback and not a tailback. Look for DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart to continue as a two back committee.
Look for this to happen, but that doesn’t mean Tolbert won’t play spoiler in his new home town, as I expect him to take away valuable touchdown chances, mainly from Cam Newton.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
Just in case you though Mike Tolbert was going to fade off into the sunset, think again as the veteran is in San Diego and will likely be the starter over Ryan Mathews. While Mathews has the tools to be a feature back in the NFL, his health is a concern after nagging injuries kept him off the field as a rookie.
With the lost time because of the lockout, it was clear in the early going of camp that Mathews still had some learning to do before he was ready to un-seat Tolbert. While I still believe Mathews is the first Chargers running back to take in fantasy drafts, I wouldn’t be surprised if Tolbert lead the team in touchdowns as he had eleven last year. It’s also likely that Tolbert will threaten for 200 carries this year, which makes him the better value option of the two tail backs.
Mathews has the talent to take over as the main option in the running game, but he needs to show he can get it done in live action and stay healthy. Look for Tolbert to be a factor in this offense for at least the first half of the season.

June 2011
Ryan Mathews was supposed to be the one running back we could count on for a great rookie season in 2010, but injuries made Mathews a bust pick as a number two running back for most fantasy owners that drafted him. In stepped Mike Tolbert to carry the load while Mathews was on the shelf as he compiled eleven touchdowns on the season and look entrenched as the Chargers goal line back heading into 2011.
I’m sure dynasty league owners with Mathews were hoping and praying that Tolbert would be let go in free agency but the Chargers have retained him as he won’t cost them a tone of money. While Mathews is the better running back to acquire on this team at your draft, Tolbert should be a clear hand cuff runner because he’s worth starting, weekly, if Mathews should suffer another injury.
