Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections
Ronnie Hillman fans will be pulling for Willis McGahee to either find a nagging injury or just flat out get demoted for the rookie. McGahee had a nice season in 2010, but the games’ scripts are going to take a 180-degree turn this year, as Tim Tebow was bounced to the curb, and Peyton Manning is now in town.
While McGahee will likely win the starting job, I don’t expect it to last past October so keep that in mind if you decide to target him as a RB3 on draft day.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
Willis McGahee moved on from the Ravens and signed with the Broncos were he will likely take on the same backup role behind Knowshon Moreno. Don’t look for McGahee to be a threat to take Moreno’s job but he will take away some opportunities at the goal line.

2011 June
Willis McGahee will probably explore the free agent market this off-season but the Ravens have continued to hope he returns to backup Ray Rice once again. If McGahee should return his presence will continue to be a thorn in Rice’s side but fantasy owners should probably expect it as Rice is just small enough that respective coaches like to have a more physical presence like McGahee around him.
2010 Preview
It was surprising to see Willis McGahee stay with the Ravens after speculation all last year that he would be gone in free agency. Instead the Ravens decided to keep their veteran runner for 3.6 million after his 14 touchdown total from 2009. Look for McGahee to continue to steal touchdowns from Ray Rice.
2010 Fantasy Football Outlook
2009 Fantasy Year In Review: It was hard to see Willis McGahee posting double digit touchdowns as Ray Rice’s backup but perhaps the writing was on the wall all along. Rice came into his second year without a touchdown in his rookie season and that year LeRon McClain was a beast at the goal line.

In 2009, the Ravens moved McClain over to the full back position and used McGahee as Rice’s only main backup. Since Rice isn’t the biggest running back the Ravens like to use another player at times to finish the drives in the end zone.
For the year McGahee had twelve rushing touchdowns and fourteen overall. He also posted a very nice five yard per carry average on his 109 carries for the season. We haven’t seen McGahee play like that since his rookie season in 2004.
2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: As the season drew to a close for the Ravens it was originally expected that the team wouldn’t pick up McGahee’s option for the final year of his contract. Because the Ravens are making a run for the Super Bowl (and McGahee’s production) they opted to keep the veteran around.
This move cleary hurt Rice’s fantasy value as if McGahee was gone, we would have to figure the young runner would be ready for a solid double digit touchdown season. Instead we have to expect that McGahee will continue to see opportunities at the goal line.
At this time, McGahee is a very nice hand cuff player to hold onto your squad if you already have Rice. If anything should happen to the young star, it would be McGahee that would be the teams’ starter. With a great overall team and a top notch offensive line, anyone that gets a chance to run on this team will be good.
If you don’t have Rice, McGahee is still a good depth player to have on your team as he can make for a bye week fill in.
