Fantasy Football Outlook: After losing key veterans in the linebacking core the last thing this team needed was to lose one of his young talents. Unfortunately that’s exactly what happened in may as last years first round pick Melvin Ingram injured his knee and will be lost for the season.

Gone are the days when we used to say San Diego had one of the more talented rosters in all of football. While this defense will probably play respectable at times, they are nothing more than a waiver wire consideration for matchup play purposes.

Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections

Let the parade begin as the evil Greg Manusky is out of town after one year! Oddly enough the man who will replace him John Pagano is the brother of Chuck Pagano the new Head Coach of the Colts, and he just hired Manusky. Go figure.

Anyway, you’re here to read about the Chargers defense so let’s get to it. San Diego received a gift when Melvin Ingram fell into their lap in the first round. Ingram will be an instant impact linebacker for the pass rush.

It was also nice to see them resign Luis Castillo, and he will help as likely a rotational end coming off a broken leg that cost him all of last season.

I also like the signing of outside linebacker Jarrett Johnson who was solid player for the Ravens and you can count on him playing well.

That’s about it though for a defense I feel needed more help to seriously contend for a playoff spot. Don’t look to the Chargers as a draftable team this summer, but they could play to a level that makes them a worthy hold as a rotational starting defense.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

With defensive coordinator Ron Rivera gone to coach the Panthers, I project this defense will tail back from the overachieving success they had a year ago. I’m not a fan of this group for fantasy football but they seem to play respectable in numbers but that is probably because of the weak division they play in more than their skill. Don’t fall for the Chargers defense this year as their are better options to depend on as draft worthy defenses.

2010 Preview

The Chargers were able to make the best of it when they lost their nose tackle Jamal Williams at the start of the season. Now, Williams is expected to leave the team, and they need a major upgrade at that position. With that said, expect linebacker Shawne Merriman to have a better season now that he is two years removed from his knee injury.

2010 Fantasy Football Outlook

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: With NT Jamal Williams going down at the start of the season and a recovering Shawne Merriman, this group looked in trouble early. To the credit of the players and the coaching staff, this group pulled it together for a respectable year.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Williams left in free agency to the Broncos and the team didn’t seem to address their issues at tackle this offseason. Because of this situation (they finished 20th against the run last year) we have the Chargers’ defense in the middle of the pack.

Merriman should be ready to bounce back now that he is two years removed from his knee injury. The team even picked up more line backing help in the draft with third round pick Donald Butler.

Overall this defense is a valuable second group for you to have on your fantasy roster this year as they will play some nice matchups throughout the season.
