Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections

What looked like a defense on the rise two years ago has turned into disappointment as they lost Nnamdi Asomugha last offseason, and linebacker Rolando McClain has been a major letdown.

The Raiders struggled in all three phases of defense, and with McClain still being used in sub-packages, the middle of the field seemed to be an easy area to convert first downs and touchdowns, as the second-year linebacker seemed lost or clueless, at times.

Maybe it was all just poor coaching, and while I’m not impressed by the switch to a 3-4 scheme, the bottom line is execution and some how limiting the penalties. If they can play disciplined football, we could see the Raiders win the AFC West.

That said, the Raiders defense is good enough to use off the waiver wire against a weak offense, but you won’t want to target them on draft day.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

It’s too bad that the Raiders are going to lose key veterans like corner back Namdi Asomugha because they finally started to look like an up and coming force in the AFC West last year. Oakland will probably continue to mature against the run and should put up around 40 sacks on the season but their secondary will be an issue this season. Look to other options as the Raiders will be lucky to finish with a record over eight and eight on the season.

2010 Preview

The Raiders should have a rock solid pass defense once again this up coming season. Where they need to up grade is in the defensive tackle position. If the Raiders can find a key player or two to help in this area, they could be a decent fill in team for fantasy.

2010 Fantasy Football Outlook

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: The Raiders’ defense showed signs that they are taking steps in the right direction last year as they finished 7th against the pass and traded for defensive end Richard Seymour. Unfortunately the defense continued its struggles against the run as they were one of the worst in that category.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: When this defense plays respectable against the run, they are a very good unit. That said, they seem to have a hard time against the shifty style running backs and that isn’t good when you face Knowshon Moreno and Jamaal Charles four games a year.

This offseason Oakland has added some defensive help at linebacker with the trade to acquire Kamerion Wembley and the addition of Rolando McClain in the draft. They even added more help on the defensive line in Lamaar Houston but that might not be enough to make them a fantasy relevant team.

Even if the offense starts giving this team leads to play with, they will still have to prove they are ready to play respectable against the run. The group might take a month or so to find themselves but at some point in 2010, they should be worth using every once in awhile.
