Defensive Coordinator: Dick LeBeau
|Twitter News||Team Schedule|
Fantasy Football Outlook: While the Steelers continue their “slow rebuild” on defense, as long as defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau is around we can count on this group to remain as one of the top squads in the game from a yardage and points given up stand point.
What’s been missing in recent years is the high turnover numbers that strikes fear and uncertainty in opponents. Gone is veteran star linebacker James Harrison as the Steelers hope first-round pick Jarvis Jones will replace his production in time.
Then you have turnover in the secondary with corner Keenan Lewis headed to New Orleans and Cortez Allen will start, while Shamarko Thomas was drafted to replace Troy Polamalu as early as next year.
Pittsburgh is still a worthy top ten fantasy defense for consideration, but they probably don’t present the upside of other defense that you can find in your draft, in terms of big plays.

Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections
When you refer to the Gold in Pittsburgh’s uniform, it must stand for Dick LeBeau because the man is money. As long as LeBeau is around, this group is going to find a way to be one of the top defenses in the league.
Maybe Pittsburgh isn’t as nasty as they once were, but I love the addition of future nose tackle Alameda Ta’aum, who should represent a youth movement on the front line. Target the Steelers as top five defense for fantasy leagues once again.
Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
I admire the Steelers franchise because over the years they understand their “roots” as a team and how they play football, and seem to strive to stay within the things that have made them so successful. My favorite team is the 49ers and for years they used to be that way until a new owner decided he wanted to put his stamp on the franchise and did away with the West Coast Offense.I bring that up because, when you understand your identity as a team, it’s easy to draft players to your system and coaching players up the way it’s been done for years.
All that said, the Steelers have been a great defense for a majority of the twenty years I’ve been playing fantasy football, and they should be the top group drafted in your league this season. In any year, they can go off for huge production, but at the worst case, they will be worth using most weeks. Expect a high turnover over rate, high sack total and one of the leagues lower average points given up per game. In short, this is clearly the best defense to put your money on in dynasty leagues and a great option for redraft leagues as well.

The Steelers got away from playing their traditional brand of football that has won them more championships than any other franchise in NFL history. Running the football and a steel curtain have been the staple for success in Pittsburgh for many years, and it is rumored that the organization wants a return to these basics in 2010. As long as Troy Polamalu is healthy, except the defense to live up to their end of the bargain.
2010 Fantasy Football Outlook
2009 Fantasy Year In Review: You would think a defense that finished with 47 sacks and 3rd against the run would’ve had a successful season. For the Steelers team defense, this isn’t the case as the bar is set for excellence every year and without Troy Polamalu, they didn’t have that kind production.
This tail back just goes to show you that it is very difficult for any fantasy defense to have two great season in a row as there are so many things that can go wrong to lose that dominant edge.
2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: I can’t remember the Steelers ever having two years in a row that they didn’t perform on defense the way they expected to do so. As long as Polamalu is healthy, this group is set up for a major bounce back season even with their star quarterback out for awhile.
Remember two years ago this defense practically carried this team to the Super Bowl as the offense was struggling on the offensive line and in the running game. This defensive unit can be dominant without their offense playing great football, and they should do this once again in 2010.
– Aggressive Playmaking Defense
– Great All Around Team Defense And Coaching
– Strong Against The Run
– Need Troy Polamalu To Stay Healthy
