Fantasy Football Outlook: Lower leg problems slowed down a hot start, but Aaron Hernandez would finish the season with 79 receptions on the year. With Rob Gronkowski playing as the traditional inline tight end, Hernandez is the teams’ Joker, lining up in the backfield, in the slot or sometimes on the outside.
While Hernandez has the skill set to be a top five tight end, I have a few concerns. First being new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has never been known for utilizing tight ends well. In Denver he waived good-bye to now Lions Joker Tony Scheffler and Lance Kendricks struggled in St. Louis last year.
Look for Gronkowski to remain as one of the top two fantasy tight ends, but it will be interesting to see if Hernandez see’s his snap count go down, early in the year.
Second issue is Hernandez has a penchant for injury, and while he’s not sustained anything major in his two years; one has to wonder if he can hold up for an entire sixteen game season?
Current ADP trends have Hernandez going as the fifth tight end (6.07, 12 team) off the board, and while he’s a respectable addition, I will likely have him seventh or eight on my board.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
While I was concerned about Rob Gronkowski’shealth coming into last season, he proved to be able to handle his business without any back problems, and became the Patriots top tight end. Fellow rookie Aaron Hernandez was a factor in the passing game as well, but he did undergo off-season hip surgery. It looks like Hernandez is recovering well from the surgery and should be a full go by camps in the late summer. Look for Hernandez to play a role in the Patriots’ offense once again, but it’s Gronkowski you will want on draft day. If something should happen to Gronkowski, at any point in the season, Hernandez would be an instant waiver wire pickup and worthy of starting if he proves to be healthy from his hip surgery.

2010 Preview
Aaron Hernandez was the second tight end drafted by the Patriots as Rob Gronkowski was selected in the second round. While Gronkowski may get first licks, he is injury prone and Hernandez is the better pure pass catcher of the two. Both tight ends should play right away as Ben Watson is gone to the Browns.
2010 Fantasy Football Outlook
2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Aaron Hernandez was a very good tight end in Florida and was really Tim Tebow’s top target after Percy Harvin left for the NFL. Because of past substance abuse issues Hernandez fell into the fourth round of the draft when the Patriots nabbed him up.
Unfortunately, for Hernandez the team also drafted Rob Gronkowski in the second round as well.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: In OTA’s Gronkowski is working in the more traditional spot for a tight end while Hernandez is practicing in the slot, H-back and even fullback. It looks like the Patriots are going to move Hernandez around in the offense to keep both players on the field as much as they can. This makes sense, and I have a feeling we might start seening more of this from different teams around the NFL.
For this season, I wouldn’t recommend you draft Hernandez, but it will be interesting to see how productive he and Gronkowski will be in this offense. If Hernandez starts making regular noise in this offense and maybe Gronkowski suffers an injury, Hernandez would make for a good waiver wire selection.
