2011 Fantasy Football Outlook: While many fantasy experts will be jumping up and down (myself included) about Jimmy Graham as a breakout tight end this season, if one man can stand in his way it is veteran David Thomas. The Saints quickly released Jeremy Shockey (now with Panthers) early in the off-season and Thomas is a free agent that is expected to be back with the team.
Coach Sean Payton and Drew Brees publicly noted that Thomas was going to be a “big part” of the offense this year, but I find that to be more off-season talk, to let us know they plan on using him. That shouldn’t be a surprise as the Saints love to spread the offense out and use many options. I wouldn’t be surprised if Thomas plays a factor in taking valuable work away from Graham early in the season, as it would hurt the team to have a veteran work with the second year tight end.
That said, if Graham continues to progress the way he did a year ago (four touchdowns in the last three games) the Saints will clearly start using Graham as the main option in the passing game. Don’t look to Thomas as a fantasy relevant option this year unless something should happen to Graham.
8/2011 Update – Thomas was signed by the Saints so the information above is in play. Look for Graham to be a bigger part of the offense, as he shrinks Thomas’s role, as we move deeper into the season.
