Fantasy Football Outlook: While Jason Witten is starting to get up in age, he’s still one of the better tight ends for fantasy football. A clear starter, Witten should benefit from Laurent Robinson leaving town, as his breakout season affected his stock.
Trending as the seventh tight end off the board in recent mocks, Witten has respectable value this summer. Unless we hear reports of Witten looking slower in camp, he should be regarded as a solid weekly play, and could return to over 1,000 yards.
August 17th Update: Witten suffered a spleen injury in the Cowboys first preseaon game and will be monitor for a possible surgery. If he’s fine for opening day, we can go ahead and bump up his projected stats and draft stock to around the seventh option off the board. Until then, he’s a low-end TE1.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
While I can’t argue with Jason Witten being ranked above Vernon Davis in PPR leagues I have a problem with Witten going ahead of him in standard leagues. Sure, Witten is one of the best tight ends when it comes to receptions and yardage total, but his touchdown totals are very up and down and mostly down.
Just two seasons ago Witten only had two touchdowns and that lack of production makes me cringe about ranking him above other tight ends with better track records. Other than that blemish, Witten is a fine tight end to own on your fantasy squad as he will be active in the Cowboys passing game once again.

2010 Preview
Tony Romo and Jason Witten are very good friends, so it’s no surprise that Witten had solid season. With 93 receptions for 1,030 yards and a whopping….wait a minute….only two freaking touchdowns? So much for taking care of your friends.
2010 Fantasy Football Outlook
2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Personally, I had very high expectations for Jason Witten coming into the 2009 season. Not only was Witten one of the top five fantasy tight ends, but with Terrell Owens gone, Tony Romo needed to find others for touchdown production.
Because of this, I thought last year was a great season for Witten to make a run at close to double digit touchdowns and man was I wrong. Instead of having one of his better years for touchdowns, Witten had one of his worst as he totaled just two for the entire season.

Even worse, one of those touchdowns was during week seventeen and many fantasy leagues don’t play that week. For all the disappointment, Witten did still total 94 receptions for over 1,000 yards and that is nothing to be ashamed of.
2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Because of the lack of touchdown production over the past couple seasons, we have Witten ranked outside the top five fantasy tight ends. If you’re in a league that is more yardage and reception friendly, Witten has more value than that.
Still, many fantasy leagues place an emphasis on touchdowns and in toughs leagues you need more than two to four touchdowns from your every week starting tight end. It is in these leagues that Witten’s lack of scoring is felt most.
