2012 Experience: 3rd Season

Fantasy Football Outlook: A trendy sleeper candidate in 2011, tight end Jimmy Graham didn’t just have a productive year, he became one of the clear elites at this position. If not for an unreal year from Rob Gronkowski, we would be talking about Graham running away as the top scorer from his position.

Drew Brees has two players that provide miss-match problems for defenses in Graham and Darren Sproles. Problem is for most defenses around the league (even the 49ers learned the hard way) is that it’s almost impossible for a linebacker to defend Graham, and eventually he’s going to hurt you.

One of the top Jokers, Graham can play inline, lineup as a wide receiver and beat corners and safeties one-on-one. When you see teams like the Buccaneers and Bills stretching for defensive backs on draft day, it’s because they know they need to do something when playing specialty tight ends like Graham, Jermichael Finley and Aaron Hernandez, to name a few.

Only in his third season, and still learning the game, Graham will be a top five fantasy tight end for many years and while he likely won’t go for 99 receptions this year, he’s worth a second round pick in ten to twelve team leagues.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

Looking for a big time sleeper at tight end this year? If so (who isn’t), your man of the year needs to be Jimmy Graham of the New Orleans Saints. Their is a reason why Jeremy Shockey was released quickly in the off-season and is now with the Panthers, and David Thomas is projected to be a backup in this offense.

That reason is because Graham’s development was a huge success last season as he took over down the stretch and had four touchdowns in the final three games. Some have even gone as far to believe that Graham will be a candidate for a top five tight end by next summers fantasy drafts. Graham has the play-making ability to be that kind of player and with Marcus Colston coming back from his second microfracture knee surgery, it may be more important that ever for Drew Brees to find his talented tight end.

Thus far, ESPN’s standard rankings and projections have Graham as a the eleventh best tight end to draft heading into the summer. Looking for Graham’s ADP value, I was a little miffed when I failed to see his name listed (top seventeen) on Mock Draft Central’s tight ends, but on Fantasy Football Calculator they have him as the seventh tight end going in ten team (95.31 overall) mock drafts.

Last year was a down year for tight end production and I will be ranking Graham as a top ten tight end this summer for standard and PPR leagues. Jump on this cat in dynasty leagues because his upside in this offense could be great. In the end, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Saints keep Thomas involved early on, as Graham is still a young tight end, but as the season moves along he could be a dominant presence, at tight end, in fantasy leagues.
