Calvin Johnson

Calvin Johnson | Detroit Lions | WR

Height: 6-5 Weight: 236 | Born: 9/25/1985

2011 Experience: 5th season

Fantasy Football Outlook: The Lions are ready to roll as they continue their progression as leagues brightest young offense around. Calvin Johnson reasserted himself as a stud last season with a consistent year and twelve touchdowns, all without Matthew Stafford on the field for about thirteen games.

No receiver in football has the skill set that Johnson posses and that is part of the reason why I feel confident in ranking him as the No.1 receiver overall in standard redraft leagues this season. If Stafford can bounce back from his shoulder problems (going well heading into the summer) I do believe Johnson is ready to take his game to another level and that means big things for fantasy owners that draft him.

Heading into the summer, Megatron’s ADP value on Mock Draft Central has him going as the 3rd best receiver in standard leagues and 3rd overall in PPR leagues. I agree with Johnson losing some value in PPR league because unlike Roddy White and Andre Johnson, Calvin doesn’t produce a big reception total but his touchdown potential is higher than most receivers.

Johnson has scored 12 touchdowns twice in the past three seasons, and I do believe he can climb to 15 plus with a healthy Stafford pulling the trigger down the field. Look for Johnson to assert himself as the games most feared receiver, this season.

2010 Preview

Calvin Johnson was a hot receiver coming into last year as he had a terrific season in 2008. Unfortunately, Johnson suffered a knee injury and it lingered for most of the season. This was the same problem for Johnson in his rookie year when he hurt his back. If Johnson is healthy he is a clear top five fantasy receiver but with injury problems in two if his three pro seasons, fantasy owners have to be concerned about his health.

2010 Fantasy Football Outlook

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Expectations were high for Calvin Johnson coming into the 2009 season, and he failed to produce because of a lingering knee problem. While Johnson played on one leg, he still managed to produce 67 receptions for 984 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games played.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Johnson is probably the most talent receiver in all of football as Randy Moss is aging. For all of Johnson’s ability I am concerned about his ability to respond physically to an injury.

In two of Johnson’s three season in the NFL, he has had an injury linger throughout the season. In his rookie year, he landed hard on his back against the Eagles, and he was slowed down because of it. In his third season, he sustained a knee injury, and it was very noticeable that the injury continued to linger with him throughout the second half of the season.

If Johnson can stay healthy he will be one of the top five producing fantasy receivers in the game. Because of his injury concerns, we have him ranked down in the lower portion of the top ten fantasy receivers for the 2010 season. If he shows the ability to stay healthy throughout this season and Matthew Stafford continues to progress, Johnson could be one of the top three receivers to get in 2011.

Great upside and ability but just remember the injury concerns on draft day.
