Fantasy Football Outlook: Through the first five games of last year it looked like Dwayne Bowe was primed for another top ten producing season at his position. Then the Chiefs regressed on offense, and Matt Cassel went down with an injury.

Look for the Chiefs to run the offense similar to how they looked back in 2010, when a heavy run first offense setup Bowe and the passing game.

Cassel functions best in this type of situation and it should mean Bowe is primed for a bounce back season. Look for Jonathan Baldwin to win a starting job, if he continues to show progress this offseason. While he may take away some of the deep ball chances, and red zone targets, Bowe will hold solid WR2 value.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

For all the Dwayne Bowe bashing going on around the internet you would have thought this guy had a bust season last year. Many experts seem to be sighting that Bowe had inconsistencies and while that’s true, I’ve yet to hear someone point out why those problems came about.

At the start of last year, the Chiefs were in a run heavy offense and play an easy schedule where all they had to do was run the football, and maintain their early leads. As the season moved along, their NFL best rushing attack, set up Bowe in the passing game, and he took advantage with one of the best seven game stretches I’ve ever seen from a receiver.

Then, quarterback Matt Cassel had an emergency appendectomy just before the Chiefs played the Chargers and Bowe suffered with a quite few games at the start of the fantasy playoffs. Blame Bowe if you want, but I don’t believe the issues sited above will be a problem this year.

The Chiefs will play a harder schedule and that will lead to them putting the football up more often. While the team has made strides to bring in talent around Bowe, rookie Jonathan Baldwin won’t be a factor and his preseason brawl with Thomas Jones, doesn’t help his chances of finding the field.

Steve Breaston will help this offense, but with Cassel struggling in practice to find chemistry with his new pass catchers, it is Bowe that will get the football. Just look at the Chiefs second preseason game, as Cassel was targeting Bowe all over the field against the Ravens and the two looked good together.

I will have Bowe as one of the top five receivers to select in standard and PPR leagues, but you can probably acquire him as possibly an early No.2 in your league. Don’t expect 15 touchdowns, but Bowe will likely have a better reception and yardage total this year.

June 2011

Dwayne Bowe was a bust in 2009, but fantasy owners who paid attention to the Chiefs’ situation in the summer knew his star wasn’t likely to burn bright as he was out of shape, and his Head Coach even demoted him to the third string at one point. This past off-season I viewed Bowe as a bounce back player because he was in terrific shape in camps and had clearly turned his attitude around from the year before.

The 2010 season started out slow for Bowe as the Chiefs established their running game but as the page turned to October, he turned it one for one of the more impressive seven game runs I’ve seen in my twenty years of playing fantasy football. Bowe would go on to lead the league with 15 touchdowns and because he’s handled himself so well this off-season I have no problem ranking him as a top five receiver.

Coming into a contract year, Bowe did receiving an increase in pay for his final year and if all goes well, he is likely to get a big deal for the Chiefs in the coming year. First round pick Jonathan Baldwin may take away some touchdown opportunities but I fully expect Matt Cassel to continue his maturing process, and get the football to Bowe more in the passing game.

8/2011 Update - With the addition of Steve Breaston and an expect tough schedule for Bowe, I’ve moved him out of the top five receivers to target but I still like him as a top ten receiver. Bowe is a terrific talent and should reach double digit touchdowns, but the Chiefs are likely to spread the football around more this season, thus share the touchdown wealth that Bowe enjoyed in 2010.

2010 Preview

Dwayne Bowe had a very disappointing season last year as he was suspended four games for a violation. Hopefully, new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis can help him turn things around.

2010 Fantasy Football Outlook

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Coming into last years’ fantasy drafts, Dwayne Bowe looked like such a promising player to have on your team. In his first and second seasons in the NFL Bowe had nice productive stats.

Then Bowe flopped last season as he was suspended for the last month of the regular fantasy football season. Even before the year started Bowe had problems as the coaching staff demoted him to the third string, and he had to work his way back.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: At least on the field Bowe hasn’t had any problems this offseason as he looks to be in shape and is running with the first team in OTA’s. If Bowe can continue to not have problems, he will still be a clear top twenty fantasy talent at receiver.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a few fantasy owners in most leagues look the other way when they see Bowe’s name because of his issues a year ago. Understanding this you will probably be able to select Bowe at a decent value at your draft. Look for Bowe to have a nice bounce back season as long as everything is good before the year begins.
