Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

I’ve been down on Lee Evans for years, since Eric Moulds and Drew Bledsoe left Buffalo. My main problem for Evans wasn’t his talent so much, but more that Evans needs the structure he had as a youngster to be an effective fantasy option regularly. Finally, Evans has that structure again, and possibly better than ever as he lands with Baltimore, after the Bills felt they had a surplus at receiver.

I’m on board to take Evans top touchdown numbers and top reception numbers over the past three years and combined them together. The Ravens were desperate for a respectable deep threat, and with Evans getting No.2 coverage and fewer double teams, he will make plays for the Ravens and is a worthy option to consider as a No.3 receiver in standard scoring formats.

No, Evans won’t catch over 80 balls in a season, but he is a player to target in the lower rounds as a sleeper to sit on, and he should give you a nice return on investment.

It looks like Lee Evans is returning the favor to Steve Johnson as being the veteran who helps take pressure off an electric young receiver, as was the case for Evans in his early years with Eric Moulds on the other side. I’ve always felt that Evans could’ve been more than a deep threat but the Bills haven’t exactly had first rate quarterbacks in his career, except for an aged Drew Bledsoe at the beginning.

While Fred Jackson brings stability to the Bills running game, this team will live off the passing game if they are going to be successful in 2011. Look to Johnson as a clear top fifteen fantasy receiver this season, and Evans is a late round backup (in deep leagues) with possible upside, if used more in the passing game.

Coming into the summer, Evans has failed to make Mock Draft Central’s top 59 receiver cut list and that shows you many fantasy owners have moved on from the once promising speedster.

2010 Preview

Lee Evans isn’t that bad of a receiver, but he’s been plagued by bad quarterback play since Drew Bledsoe left the team. Unless the Bills draft an instant impact rookie quarterback, I suggest using Evans as a backup receiver at best.

2010 Fantasy Football Outlook

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Somehow Lee Evans actually got seven touchdowns last season but that was the high note for the Bills entire passing game. While Evans had a decent touchdown total, he only had just over 600 yards receiving and that isn’t going to cut it for fantasy owners.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: If there is a passing game that is worse than the Cleveland Browns this year it has to be the Bills. I would grade the Browns a little higher because they have a much more respectable offensive line.

While Evans is a good talent he is stuck with a horrible supporting cast and that is why he is a clear bench player for your fantasy squad. With so much working against Evans it will be virtually impossible for him to be a reliable weekly option for you to count on.
