Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
Heading into the summer Mike Thomas is shaping up to be the Jaguars No.1 receiver with Mike Sims-Walker headed to the free agent market. Thomas may not have the ideal tools to be a top receiver for an NFL team but he’s progressed well in his first two seasons as a pro and is walking into that magical third season, that we love to talk about in fantasy football.
Before you can be a fantasy relevant player, you need a chance to play and get the football on a regular basis and Thomas is projected to get that. I look to Thomas as a better receiver for PPR leagues as he should move his reception total up from 66 last year to possibly as high as 90, if he should continue to receive the top looks in the offense.
It looks like the Jaguars are going let rookie Blaine Gabbert compete with David Garrard for the starting job at quarterback. I believe Garrard will start the season as the teams starter and that is better for Thomas’s value.
Heading into the summer, Thomas’s ADP value on Mock Draft Central is listed as the 56th best (178.77 average pick) receiver going in standard redraft leagues and a little better in PPR leagues at 50th (164.65 average) overall. Clearly, Thomas is a great value if you should target him in the later rounds as he’s going in the 18th round in standard ten team leagues and the 17th round in ten team PPR leagues.
Again, I like Thomas much better in PPR leagues and he’s worth owing to begin the season in ten team PPR leagues, but in standard leagues he’s probably not a selection unless your in a 14 team league or deeper.
