Fantasy Football Outlook: Maybe it’s the short man in me, but Steve Smith has been one of my favorite receivers, since he broke onto the scene in the Panthers Super Bowl run.
However, I was devastated when I found out Smith would not be moving on to a team like the Chargers last offseason, instead opting to stay in Carolina.
Who knew that would turn out so well, so fast, as Cam Newton was a rock star, bringing Smith back to life and in the top ten receivers for fantasy, again.
As the season went on Smith’s numbers started going down, and in the final seven games of the season Smith only managed to have over 86 yards one time. The Panthers found better success in the ground game, as defenses were forced to respect Newton’s arm and Smith’s ability to beat coverage.
Going as the 14th receiver off the board in current ADP trends, I believe that is a proper place to rank Smith, this year. Grabbing him as a solid WR2 is a great value for such a tough minded, and still gifted athlete. Smith will have his slow days, but he will deliver as a solid WR2 on your team.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
It seemed likely that Steve Smith was headed out of Carolina as he reportedly asked the team for a tradein the winter. While Smith says he wants to stay will Carolina, I have to wonder if it is in part because Cam Newton lobbied for him to stay and also because of his wife’s illness this past spring. Not sure if Smith resides in Carolina, but I would imagine he would want to be close to his wife as he almost retired this spring because of her health. Anyway, it looks like Smith will be with the Panthers once again, and that is great news for Newton, but poor news for his fantasy value, as we thought, he might play with the Chargers, Patriots or even Bears.
While I expect the “vibe” around the team to be a positive one to start the season, I’m not sure what kind of a year Smith is actually going to have. The past two seasons have been horrible, except for a late-season spurt in 2009. Originally, I had Smith’s projected stats around just over 1,000 yards and six touchdowns, but I’ve tailed it back to around 900 yards and five touchdowns.
It will be interesting to see if Smith’s ADP value holds in as a top 30 receiver this year, but I would expect his value to decline in light of his announcement to stay in Carolina. In the end, Smith is worth having on your roster, but I would look to other options for regular starts, as Smith will probably suffer from consistency issues.

2011 June
Steve Smith has had a couple down seasons, but it’s hard to blame him as his quarterback situation has been one of the worst in football. It looks like Smith has asked to be traded when the lockout ends and its likely that he will go elsewhere and play for a playoff caliber team. Rumors throughout the spring have Smith’s likely landing spot as the San Diego Chargers and that would be great for his fantasy value.
True, the Chargers have Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates but there is enough love to in this pass first offense to make Smith a respectable option on your team. Heading into the summer, Smith’s ADP value on Mock Draft Central lists him as the 35th receiver going in standard redraft leagues. This would be about right if he stays with the Panthers, but if he should move, he is probably a top 25 receiver and a respectable No.3 receiver for your fantasy football squad.
2010 Fantasy Outlook
2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Steve Smith suffered through a horrible stretch through most of the season with Jake Delhomme as his quarterback. For whatever reason, Coach John Fox continues to be loyal to his veterans even when they are failing to get the job done.
As soon as Matt Moore took over after Delhomme suffered an injury, Smith’s fantasy value moved back to its usual production. At the end of the year Smith was a solid fantasy receiver once again as he scored a touchdown in all three of his final games played.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Look for Smith to have a nice bounce back season with Moore under center. Smith’s physical tools were definitely not the problem last year as he was more than explosive with Moore throwing the football.
A return to eight plus touchdowns and over 1,200 yards receiving should be an easy task for this one time tip five fantasy stud receiver.
